Found: The Perfect Sweater
Historic British clothier Turnbull & Asser, which opened a new flagship in Midtown last fall, has more custom services than, well, almost anyone in NYC. This fall the flagship is extending its already-booming bespoke offerings (which include suits, shirts, ties, umbrellas, smoking jackets, and more) into cashmere.
The new service will take Turnbull’s astounding selection of colored cashmere sweaters (check out the store’s first-floor “Cashmere Wall,” which showcases sweaters, socks, and more in a full spectrum of colors) to the next level, giving customers the chance to customize the plush fabric in a range of different styles and have it tailored to their bodies.
Clients will work with the manager of the bespoke department, selecting from a book of more than 100 colors and a handful of sweater styles, including the ribbed zip-up jacket, the shawl-neck sport coat, and the classic cardigan. Measurements and style selections will be sent to Corgi, a revered cashmere producer in Wales. They’ll sew the sweaters by hand, using fine cashmere from Todd and Duncan of Scotland, whose reputation goes back nearly 150 years. The process takes four to six weeks.
Turnbull & Asser: 50 East 57th Street, 212.752.5700; bespoke cashmere from $1,295 to $2,885
