But now comes the definitive craft moment, as the Museum of Modern Art holds its first-ever open call competition for local artists and designers to sell their products in MoMA Design Stores and on its website. Although the Design Store has featured items by local designers in the past, there’s never been a full collection specifically dedicated to New York City–based work.
For this venture, a panel of judges will curate an exclusive collection that exhibits innovative use of material and production, aligns with contemporary New York design and style, and is produced locally. As many as 75 designers will be involved, and the collection will include items from all areas of design—from postcards and journals to games, jewelry, and furniture.
The deadline for submissions is June 30, and the winner’s collection will be sold in the MoMA design store early next year.
